Travemünde Strand

Das Ostsee-Heilbad Travemünde Strand

The former little fishing village at the estuary of the river Trave in the Baltic Sea was founded in 1187. In that time the count Adolf von Schauenburg built a tower to defend the region against the Vikings and the Slavs.

In 1329 the traders of Lübeck bought the access to the Baltic Sea for more than 7.060 "Lübsche Mark" (the currency of Lübeck). Therewith the access to the port of Lübeck was save. The citizens of Travemünde used to live from fishing and navigation.

In 1802 Travemünde was appointed to be the 3rd coastal resort after Heiligendamm and Norderney. Already in 1824 many steamships of Riga, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg arrived.

The port of Travemünde: the gate to the Baltic Sea

Up to nowadays Travemünde did not loose any of his charm. The big beach at both sides of the Trave, the Casino which is known worldwide and the spa hotel. While the visitors have a walk at the broad esplanade, the freighters and liners leave the port and slide along the horizon.

Big international events like the Travemünder Woche (a sailing contest), the Drachenfest (festival of kites), the power boat race or the Cutty Sark attract visitors each year to come to Travemünde. The number of visitors is rising permanently during the last centuries.

In Travemünde the maritime past meets the present. From a sailing regatta to an icebreaker, from a fishing boat to a liner - the Baltic Sea connects Travemünde and Lübeck with the rest of the world - the German gate to the Baltic Sea.

Die Passat im Hafen von Travemünde Strand

Travemünde's landmark is the four-masted sailing ship "Passat" which is under monumental protection. It is said to be the most beautiful of his kind. Since 1959 the sailing ship of 56 meters heights has its permanent anchorage at the docks of Travemünde.
