World Heritage Side of the Unesco
Since 1972 the UNESCO tries to save the heritage site of all folks of the world.
In 1987 the entire old town of Lübeck was also enlisted on the list of the heritage
site of the UNESCO. This was the first time that an entire old town was put on the
list in the whole north of Europe.
The crucial factor thereby was the striking skyline of Lübeck and the completely
conserved pre-industrial basic fabric. Furthermore the subsurface was an important
point of interest for the archaeological discovery of the mediaeval life in a town.
This kind of award is not only an honour, but also a permanent commitment which the
Hanseatic town Lübeck has to satisfy.

Nowadays even the underground became a part of the heritage site, with more than three
millions of archaeological findings.
In the list of the UNESCO you find more than 550 cultural sites or nature places throughout the world.
